I use truecrypt to store 'sensitive' things on an encrypted volume on my external HDD, it works brilliantly. Just make sure you use a password you'll never forget.. because I'm fairly sure you can't recover it.

Best and simple would be ATA Disk Protection for your HDD , not sure for other hardware
