GIMP light ray behind text - awil - 06-08-2010

Hi SF..

I'm gonna show some GIMP tutorial that I get from youtube. This tut is called 'light rays behind text'.

Ok. First, open a 200 X 200 layer with foreground colour (solid black).

Next, make a new transparent layer.

Use "text tool" and write any text you want. Use any font and size that you desire. Choose the font colour white.

Position the text to the centre of the layer using "alignment tool". If you don't know how to make use this tool, follow the step below :

1. click on the "alignment tool"
2. click on the text that you have made just now
3. click on the verticle distribute
4. click on the horizontal distribute

or just see the image below

Now merge the text layer with the transparent layer.

by right click on the text layer > merge down.

Duplicate the layer two times, so there will be three text layer.

Click on the first layer to make it active. Then Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
you can experiment with the setting

Now click on the second layer to make it active.

Then Filters > Blur > Motion Blur.

Create a new transparent layer and place it on top of all layer.

Now set your FG colour to grey ( #9d9d9d ). Use "bucket fill tool" and fill the transparent layer with th grey colour.
Set the layer to 'overlay'.

Next, Colours > Colour Balance
Note : you can experiment it by yourself to get the colour you want.

Here is the final result :

You also can replace the text by using image and just follo the steps.

Nice, I might try one day.

You picked a really nice font and the end result is eye-catching. Are transparent backgrounds at all possible with this style?

RE: GIMP light ray behind text - awil - 06-11-2010

@ DeMeR : I think it's nice too.

@ Eve : No. Transparent background will effect the final result.

The "colour balance" can't function.
