[TUT]Great USB tools and how to use them - caspur - 05-13-2010 Hello SF this is a list of very helpful programs I've collected over the last 2 years. All of these programs are free(If my memory serves me right) and they all fit onto a 1 GB flash or USB drive. Most of these programs come in handy for anyone who works on computers and the programs range from key finders to programs that can find all specs of your computer. Please Enjoy any of these programs you think may benefit you. INFO: All sizes are reflected after the program is INSTALLED. DEVICE DOCTOR PORTABLE ---------------------- HOME: http://www.devicedoctor.com/ DOWNLOAD: http://www.devicedoctor.com/device-doctor-portable.php TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 8.9 MB Device Doctor Portable is a program that will find driver updates for all of your computer hardware with just one click. It will even find drivers for any pesky "Unknown" devices that may be in your Device Manager that you just can't find drivers for. This is a very useful program for anyone and even more so if you work on many computers (Friends, family etc.) or have a part time computer repair business. How it works: Device Doctor Portable is very easy to use. Just insert your USB stick open the Device Doctor Portable folder and double click "Device Doctor" Spoiler (Click to View) It will open a very straight forward menu. Click on "Begin Scan" Spoiler (Click to View) It will scan your system hardware which usually takes 10 secs to a minute depending on how many drivers you need and very clearly tells what you need to update and download. Spoiler (Click to View) As you can see I have 3 drivers I need to update. There are Download links right next to the drivers that you can click on and it will take you right to the driver download page on the Device Doctor website. Other info: Sometimes when you update a chip-set it will still come up in the scan, so do not worry if you updated before and it still comes up. SPECCY ------ HOME: http://www.piriform.com/ DOWNLOAD: http://www.piriform.com/speccy TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 3.2 MB Speccy is a program that will find all of your system specifications and also tell you how hot certain devices are running such as your CPU and Graphics card. It is a very user friendly program. As soon as you open Speccy it will begin to scan your system and find it's specs. It usually won't take more than a few seconds or so. How it works: Just put in your USB stick, find and click on the Speccy folder and double click the Speccy exe icon. Spoiler (Click to View) As you can see it instantly found all of my system specs and only took about 5 seconds. Spoiler (Click to View) This screen shows the basic specs of your system such as your operating system, CPU and it's current temp, RAM, motherboard, graphics card and the temp it's currently running at, hard drives and their temperature, optical (dvd, cd) drives and your audio device. Now, if you look over at the left side of Speccy you'll see a side menu where you can click on a specification of your system. Spoiler (Click to View) I'll click on CPU Spoiler (Click to View) As you can see in the screen shot it gives a much more in-depth view of your system spec(in this case my CPU). I'm not going to do more than the CPU for Speccy, you should get the idea of it by now. This is a very useful tool to have with you if you work on many computers as it can save you a bundle of time and can help you diagnose many problems(Overheating, devices not working properly etc.). DEAD PIXEL FIXER ---------------- HOME: Unknown DOWNLOAD: http://majorgeeks.com/Dans_Dead_Pixel_Fixer_d5571.html Creator: Dan Wright TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 32 KB I forget how I came across this but, it is an awesome tool. What it does is continuously flash red, green and blue over a dead or stuck pixel and there is a good chance that it will fix it( I've used it quite a few times and it worked out about 70% to 80% of the time). How it works: This is another easy to use tool. Plug in your USB stick find the directory your Dead Pixel Fixer is in and double click the Dead Pixel Fixer exe icon. Spoiler (Click to View) It will bring up a small, easy to understand box with a few options Spoiler (Click to View) You can see that there are 6 options for you to choose from (3 buttons, 2 slide bars and a check box). The 3 buttons that say small, medium and large are for the box that will open on your screen to fix your pixel/s. If you only have a single dead pixel you can choose small. If you have more than one dead pixel and they are spaced apart then you can choose medium or large depending on how many dead pixels you have and how far apart they are. INFO: Do not hit one of these buttons until you have selected a length of time simply because it will not do anything but stay black. The slider bars are for how long you would like the program to run. I would suggest at least a few hours(when you are going to bed or work just let it run while you are away or asleep). So you would take the "hour" bar up a few notches and then you can choose your "size" button. Once you hit the size button a box will appear that flashes the colors red, green and blue very fast over and over again( I would post a screen but it would just be a big red, green or blue box). This box needs to be in the front of your screen so it can hit the dead pixel so you can't really run anything when you are using this tool. Let it run for a few hours and then check and see if your pixel is fixed, if it's not then you can try again for a longer amount of time. Other info: Like I said it works 70 to 80 percent of the time for me so it may or may not work for you. I have no idea what the box that says "Always on top(recommended)" does it doesn't seem to change anything. Cool info: I actually fixed dead pixels on a PSP by running PSPdisp on my psp and running this when my psp is a small monitor for my desktop. ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM CLEANER -------------------------- HOME: http://intelliadmin.com/ DOWNLOAD: http://www.intelliadmin.com/index.php/downloads/ TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 937 KB Ever uninstalled a program to find out that it's still in your add/remove programs folder? This program will delete the program from your add/remove program list. How it works: Plug in your USB stick, find the directory that the Add/remove Program cleaner exe is in and then double click it. It will bring up a menu that looks like this Spoiler (Click to View) What to do next is very simple, find the program you want to delete from your add/remove programs in the list on the menu and then hit the "Remove from add/remove programs list and Wallah it's gone. Fairly simple huh? Other info: This WILL NOT uninstall a program. It only removes the program from the add/remove program list. GAMEKEYREVEALER & SOFTKEYREVEALER --------------------------------- HOME: http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/ DOWNLOAD GAMEKEYREVEALER: http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/gamekeyrevealer DOWNLOAD SOFTKEYREVEALER: http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/softkeyrevealer TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: GameKeyRevealer 1.2 MB SIZE: SoftKeyRevealer 188 KB These are some awesome and very useful tools. What they do are search your system for either games or software and gives you the CD-keys and/or serials for that game or software. It is very easy to use you only need one or two clicks and you have the keys and serials you need. This can come in handy if you work on yours or other peoples computers and you need to format a drive or uninstall that particular game or software. Instead of having to search for the case and keys/serials(That's if they/you still even have them) just run this program and you got everything you need. How it works: Plug in your USB stick and find your directory with the game and soft keyrevealer programs. For GameKeyRevealer double click the exe icon and it will bring up a menu that looks like this Spoiler (Click to View) Simply click the "Find Games" button and it will find any games you have that require a key or serial as you see below Spoiler (Click to View) Now, for SoftKeyRevealer double click your exe icon and it will bring up a menu that automatically finds your software keys and serials as seen below Spoiler (Click to View) It's that easy and can get you out of a pinch. Other info: I know at least for World of Warcraft it doesn't find they keys but, it finds it for all my other games. MAILPASSVIEW ------------ HOME: http://www.nirsoft.net/ DOWNLOAD: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mailpv.html TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 70 KB Mail Passview is a program that will let you view passwords for any user on most Email clients (outlook, thunderbirdbird etc.) on the computer it is run on. How it works: Plug in your USB stick and find the directory with the "mailpv" exe icon in it. Double click that icon and it will bring up a menu with the user names and passwords and email information. Take a look below. Spoiler (Click to View) As you can see it shows all the information some would need that lost their user name or password. WIRELESS KEYVIEW ---------------- HOME: http://www.nirsoft.net/ DOWNLOAD: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 72 KB Wireless Keyview is a program that will enable you to view wireless network keys on whatever network you run the program from. How it works: Plug in your USB stick and find the directory with the "Wirelesskeyview" exe icon double click it and it will bring up a menu that shows network name, key type and hey (key, password). Spoiler (Click to View) It's simple and can come in handy in certain situations(router locked and no pass) enjoy that one NETSCAN PORTABLE ---------------- HOME: http://www.softperfect.com DOWNLOAD: http://www.softperfect.com/products/networkscanner/ TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: 726 KB This next one is one of my favorites. It is a portable port scanner. Key features(taken from website): * Pings computers. * Does not require administrative privileges. * Detects hardware (MAC) addresses even across routers. * Detects hidden shared folders (normally invisible on the network) and write accessible shares. * Detects your internal and external IP addresses. * Scans for listening TCP ports and SNMP services. * Retrieves currently logged-on users. * You can mount and explore network resources. * Can launch external third party applications. * Exports results to HTML, XML, CSV and TXT * Supports Wake-On-LAN, remote shutdown and sending network messages. * Retrieves potentially any information via WMI. * Retrieves information from remote registry. * It is absolutely free, requires no installation, and does not contain any adware/spyware/malware. If you don't know how to use a port scanner then Google it. Screenshot of my network port-scanned: Spoiler (Click to View) Yes you can explore folders with it pretty awesome. WINDOWS QUICK FIX -------------------- HOME: http://leelusoft.blogspot.com/ DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS XP: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/XP-Quick-Fix-Plus.shtml DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS 7: http://download.cnet.com/7-Quick-Fix/3000-2094_4-75024066.html?part=dl-10055425&subj=dl&tag=button TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware SIZE: Windows XP Quick Fix 626 KB SIZE: Windows 7 Quick Fix 575 KB Windows Quick Fix is a program that will let you run various components of Windows XP or Windows 7 (Depending on which version you download) that may have been disabled or is being blocked by a virus or malware. Have you ever gotten a virus that disabled your task manager? How about regedit or the run command? These 2 programs can fix that with the click of a single button. How it works: Plug in your USB stick and find the directory with the exe icons lfx and/or qf (lfx is WinXP and qf is WIN7). Double click on which ever version you need and it will bring up a menu like one of the ones below: Windows XP menu: Spoiler (Click to View) Windows 7: Spoiler (Click to View) As you can see there are many choices on both menus and all choices are pretty self explanatory but, if you need more information you can hover your pointer over a choice and it will display more info about it in the box on the bottom like this: Spoiler (Click to View) I'm going to hit enable Task Manager on the Windows 7 menu and I get a small message like this: Spoiler (Click to View) And my task manager is enabled (if it was disabled in the first place of course). These tools have proven themselves on numerous occasions to me. I used them about 2 months back on my friends computer that was littered with viruses and malware and I was unable to open task manager, regedit and I couldn't even get the context menu (right click) up. I hope that these two tools will get you out of a pinch. Enjoy. WARNING: I would not use the WinXP version on WIN7 and vice versa. I'm not sure what will happen but, just to be safe I wouldn't try it. Well that's it for this list/tut I hope everyone finds somethings beneficial to them sorry it was so long and Enjoy. There are lots of other portable programs I have and use but, these are the most common and user friendly that I currently have. Maybe I'll make another soon about the best programs I've found to install.
