Bad or spam backlinks are harmful for your website. They can be detected using Google webmaster tools. These links should be removed to avoid any search engine penalties.

Removing back links is a two step process. The FIRST thing you must do is disavow the links using Google Webmaster Tools, and similar services for other search platforms. Secondly, you should message the site owner and ask to be removed.
