Gnome-Shell - g4143 - 11-12-2009
Has anyone checked out the Gnome-Shell? its supposed to be the next big thing in the Gnome desktop...I tried to load it in Mandriva 2010 but the package manager is still a little buggy so I have to wait....

Well its going to be Gnome in one year...I think its going to be released in Sept of 2010

I think this looks cool. I'll wait too for a full install, however, given that you are right about it being buggy.
It seems it highlights usability for an office worker (unlikely to have a porn pic or two in the Recent Documents area). I'd probably stick with Gnome standard myself (I'm sure this will be possible). For one thing, I like to turn off the Recent Documents which sort of makes that bit useless for me. Plus, I put the apps I use most often on the panel as icons anyway, so it's quicker than having to click a menu first.

Does Linux have a spotlight alternative? - I can just type any document/application/contact/song/movie.etc into Spotlight and it'll find it for me; better than this gnome-shell garbage.

Gnome-Shell is the new general desktop environment for Gnome, to come out with version 3, probably after next September.
If you mean searches, there are lots of search programs for Linux. I tend to use Google Desktop.
I think beagle is more like Spotlight, though: http://beagle-project.org/Main_Page
And there are other search programs available.
