Panther no-cd root password reset - lotsfits - 11-04-2009

Hi there, I know this is kind of old when people are talking about Snow Leopard, but I've lost my root password for my Mac. Since my Mac has only 1 user which is the default admin and logging in to desktop is not password-protected, I can login and use as usual, but I can't install new applications without the password. I've searched around for some ways, found them, tried them, but none worked. I don't know if I did it wrong or what, but I'd appreciate it if anyone experienced here can teach me how to reset the password from boot. A way that you actually tried and worked. All I know is the mount -uw / and start from there. Thanks a lot!

I don't know about panther, but Leopard/Snow-Leopard does some weird sudo-ish thing that only requires you to enter YOUR password, Anyway if OS X does the normal UNIX-ish thing just type passwd once you have the root partition mounted.
