Two Hard Drives - Baked - 03-05-2011

Okay, I have my internal hard drive (280 GB) , then I have my external hard drive (300 GB)
I keep all my stuff on my internal but all my media and back up on external.

I have this broken laptop, which the hard drive is still good in it. I have Windows 7 installed on my internal hard drive, I was wondering if I could hook my laptop hard drive into my desktop and install Linux onto it.

I have an extra SATA Cable and everything, I'm just not sure if it will work.

Thanks for your help.

You'd need an adapter cable and a power supply for the disk. Because the connectors from your desktop PSU will not fit the laptop hardrive.

However I would strongly suggest you don't do it I would recommend using a hardrive caddy and connecting your laptop hardrive to your desktop computer via USB from there you should be able to install linux on it fine.

Thanks h-boy, that was a helpful reply.

I forgot about putting in the power supply, My desktop is full of space to expand.
Where do I get these hard drive caddies ? I want to look into them, it'd be nice to have 2 separate hard drives.
With access to both operating systems.

Thanks H-Boy, that's helpful.
I actually didn't know this, but do I have to get a certain caddy for a laptop hard drive ?

It would be awesome to have the choice to use, Linux or Windows.

Before you buy one you should take into consideration the following

Is your laptop hardrive IDE or SATA
Either way you will need to make sure that the size is 2.5

Alright, my laptop I'm pretty sure is SATA.

But I will have to make sure before buying a caddy, Thanks again H-Boy, When I get 100 posts I'll rep you. Big Grin
You've helped me out extensively.
