Locking our own threads - AceInfinity - 11-11-2010

I do not know whether or not this has been mentioned in the past, but a similar idea made this cross my mind.

I've noticed a lot of staff members having to go around on that extra 1 post people make to request a lock on the thread the person created. So I was wondering if it would be any easier to just allow the users to do it instead. With a post count as a requirement even. I'd say around 750-800 is reasonable.

I'm not sure what the outlook on this idea is, but i'll post this anyway to raise some discussion on this. Smile

Unless Omni wanted a member paid system for it. Where you have to buy an upgrade?

RE: Locking our own threads - Omniscient - 11-11-2010

HF has a plugin I created to do this but it's not part of MyBB 1.4x. So the answer is no...we won't have this here as I don't find locking threads except in certain circumstances to be very important for members.

I really like this idea, since you cant upgrade to lock your threads like you can on HF. And I'm not sure if there really is any harm in allowing it.

Edit: seems Omni posted before I could get my 2 cents in haha.

I think it would just cause trouble.

How in the world would locking your OWN thread cause trouble... Im just curious.

I'd wonder the same thing. It would prevent trouble in any case.

But Omni posted no so I guess that sums up the final decision right away Smile The reason why I posted this is because i've seen many forums where the solution has already been given to the original poster, and some other user comes along a week after and posts within the same thread without even reading that it's already been solved.

We can't do anything about that when Omni says no though, so it wasn't a big deal, I just wanted to put that out in the open Smile

I think it would cause trouble because people would create a thread with alt+255 lock it, or add a thread with a legitimate question and lock it, or someone will say that were not adding it (Like omni just did) And people get mad. I over-think alot so.. yeah.

Although it would be a nice feature I agree, since this is a support forum someone might come to the site in the future and want to ask a question on an older thread or something.

Like Omniscient specified before, closing threads isn't something we do lightly. For example a discussion thread or a support thread we will keep open because we want members to keep posting and we can bring the community together more, if members start closing threads that still offer good advice or discussion to the community then it could become a negative.

I agree with this. I was thinking about this as well, it makes a lot of sense, and since SF still isn't the biggest forum, you'll want more activity.

If they started doing that though, they would just get banned anyway. People don't get mad for him not adding it, the only people I could see having a problem with it is from getting annoyed that people are still responding to an ended topic.
