Desktop is always the most powerful. You can mod it more and you can make it as heavy as you want! A laptop has mobility sometimes and is limited on modding it. In conclusion, a desktop is better.

I don't even use a desktop anymore. Anything I could do on a desktop before, I can do on my laptop now.

I suggest you get one of each.
I myself have 2 desktops, a netbook and a laptop.
I use 1 desktop for gaming/MSN/home stuff
I use 1 desktop for forums/pr0nz/etc
I use my netbook for trips (I have a USB modem)
I use my laptop for schoolwork and such.

I say desktop if its a major experiment. Because desktops can be more customizable and also have higher specs for a lower price.
And you can upgrade it to the max unlike a laptop due to the limited space.
