This is really well written. I'll bookmark this just in case if any of my friends need help with their forums. They run private server games and some have security forums.

Not even close. Not even close.
Now if you want my opinion then i will give it.
I use twitter, facebook and myspace as part of promotion of my sites.
Do i ever expect a single visitor to register? Nope. They wont IMHO.
Its about traffic. Its about link love. Its about other things than trying to get a new forum or site up and successful.
This alone will offer you NOTHING to your site. Really it will.
You need to have a site with CONTENT that will drive people to want to register and post.
Otherwise your just another resource for others to use.
Look Twitter specifically is a powerful tool for certain things.
Not gaining members however. Sure manipulating the SERPS is one of them.
Every post on my forum has for some time been directed to most popular social network sites.
Shortened urls etc. All automated. Sure every post ever made gets 30-50 hits almost instantly. That is good for traffic and adsence. But not good for a member drive.
