I build all my sites with Fireworks. I been using it since 2.0 when it was Macromedia. I didn't like that Adobe bought them but oh well. It's stil a great tool. Currently I use CS3 version.
I know that photoshop is more "powerful" but I find it unsuited for web graphics.

I prefer Fireworks when working with the web as well. I designed my web hosting site with it a while ago.
Photoshop is good for what it's meant for, but, overall, fireworks ftw if it's web related.

I got my hands on macromedia fireworks first.. i felt bad when i figured that macromedia was sold to adobe, ah business.... For general editing i use fireworks... Working to get used to Photoshop

The pics you made weren't too bad if you're just starting out.
I'd suggest puting some variation in there though. Instead of just changing the transparency on the chicks, try fading them in and out, puting them to the side, using lots of layers etc.
Btw no offense or anything, but in all honesty the fiery looking one was a bit of a disaster.
And to those of whom are interested in what Fireworks can produce, here are some of my 5min projects....
