RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - Codine - 10-14-2009 What about trying a windows update (I presume your on windows) And if your on linux just do a system update. Just a tought, which laptop has a external drives So back to topic. Every software/install disc has autorun file within, I've had a virus that disabled handling of those autorun files, with the result of disk not even showing up, double click would just spit out a message "Please enter a disk in E:\". So that is my first suggestion, get really sure that it's not a virus. Now it happend also that my IDE cable was damaged and the drive had problems reading, cd's but some how it always would read music cd. Since you are using a laptop I can only say take it to an expert. The drive could be damaged. But I still belive that it has something to do with the autorun. Did you un/installed some software in last time period that needed drivers to be installed/updated? For real... was it shipped with the laptop when you bought it? RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - Steve Torres - 10-14-2009 Thanks for the suggestions. Did windows update. No change. I don't think there is anything physically wrong with my drive. The install disks won't even show up on my computer. I tried Run "D:\Setup.exe" and "D:\Autorun.exe" to no avail. Finally I tried going to the command line and looked up dir on D:\ and it kicks me back to C:\. Like I said though it still plays audio. I'm still playing around with the drivers. I'll let you know if it works. RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - Extasey - 10-14-2009 Have your dropped it recently? My thoughts are: 1. Dodgey device (needs replacing) 2. Dodgey drivers (but you've already tried that) Thats very strange. Does it actually read the disk? or is it just saying "Please insert disc into drive X:"? RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - INCARNATIO - 10-14-2009 I KNOW OF SOMETHING IF YOU GO TO THE DEVICE MANAGER WHERE THINGS COULD EITHER BE ENABLED OR DISABLED, YOU COULD CHECK IF ANY DEVICE WAS DISABLED THERE, EQUALLY I AGREE WITH WHAT IBF SAID, U COULD ONCE IN WHILE UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS................EVEN YOU COULD EQUALLY TRY REPLACING IT TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM IS FROM THE SYSTEM ITSELF.................... THIS REAL INCARNATIO TRYING HIS BEST RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - Codine - 10-14-2009 (10-14-2009, 03:18 AM)NinjaGeek Wrote: For real... was it shipped with the laptop when you bought it? Errm, how can i put this in a kind of "Legal" way... It's a bit erm, hot? LOL RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - INCARNATIO - 10-14-2009 I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING RIGHT NOW, WHAT IF YOU TRY REPAIRING YOUR WINDOWS IT COULD JUST REPAIR A BROKEN CODE DESTROYED BY A VIRUS......................... SUGGESTION 1; YOU CAN REPAIR IT BY REMOVING THE HARD DRIVE AND TAKE IT TO ANOTHER SYSTEM...... SUGGESTION 2; YOU CAN CHOOSE TO CONNECT THE SYSTEM OVER A NETWORK AND SHARE THE DRIVE SO AS TO ACCESS IT OVER THE NETWORK, BY SO DOING YOU COULD KNOW IF ITS FROM THE SYSTEM ITSELF.............................FINALLY I THINK YOUR SYSTEM HAS GOT A LOT TO DO WITH ITS MALFUNCTIONING...................THIS IS REAL INCARNATIO RE: My DVD drive reads music but not install disks. - Steve Torres - 10-14-2009 Thanks for all the suggestions. I just found out that the person I'm trying to fix this for has a replacement service for this, (if this computer stops functioning correctly they will replace it). Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I'll never really know what the actual problem was. Sorry to waste everyone's time. (stayed up all night for nothing....) This can be closed. |
