Xubuntu
Kubuntu (I don't like)
Ubuntu Netbook/Unity (Better UI for Netbooks works with Laptops, and desktops)

1. Ubuntu or variations
2. Mint
3. Sabayon

I havn't tried much else. Don't go with sabayon if you're completely new.

Mint is a Ubuntu variation.
