Hey there! I definitely agree with you on the rise of electric cars. It’s amazing to see the shift towards more sustainable transportation options. In terms of the next big thing in the automobile industry, many experts believe that autonomous or self-driving cars are the way of the future. Companies like Tesla, Google, and Uber are already investing heavily in this technology, which could revolutionize how we think about transportation. It’s inevitable but there’s significant issues with the global grid + space. For me in the UK, if you can’t home charge it’s a deal breaker, just because of our limited space and the fact that new builds barely have drive ways these days, let alone the space and charging infrastructure to accommodate everyone owning an EV.

Professionally I have been very close to these challenges and have helped drive adoption and develop charging infrastructure significantly over the last decade but until we solve that problem, or batteries take a few minutes to charge and we can leverage the exists ICE fuel station infrastructure as-is I think we’re still ~50 years away from the level of adoption we think.

A key point also is that whilst the car might be electric, the battery can’t be recycled and is quite hazardous + the electricity you charged it with is still likely coming from fossil fuels/coal etc.

Alice A lot of our issues in the UK stem from planning, red tape and in general the cost of critical infrastructure projects. But I think the key criticism from an energy perspective would be getting serious about Nuclear.

Sam The Tesla network is pretty amazing from my experience but I agree, certainly in for example large rural areas that it’s home charging or bust until battery technology improve significantly.

But it’s definitely a step in the right direction towards a greener and more sustainable transportation system.
