Looking for a new laptop, advice needed

Hey everyone, just throwing a question out there regarding laptops. My old one finally bit the dust after a good six years and I’m on the hunt for a new one.

So I’m currently using my phone for everything and it’s not exactly the most efficient way to get my work done…anyone who’s tried typing out a dissertation on a phone will feel my pain, lol.

I mainly used my old laptop for university work, binge-watching Netflix, and the odd bit of gaming. Nothing major - think Minecraft and Stardew Valley rather than Call of Duty. One thing I really loved about my old laptop was the long battery life, it used to give me 9+ hours! And a pet peeve of mine - bad speakers. My last laptop had such bad ones I always needed headphones.

With all the different specs, brands, and prices out there, it feels like I’m navigating a minefield. Seriously, could the amount of choice be any more overwhelming? Last year’s MacBook Pro might be a great powerhouse, but the new Dell XPS 15 caught my eye too. Plus, there’s the whole debate between windows and macOS…

Had anyone tried them out and have any thoughts? Or even something completely different that you swear by?

Budget-wise, I’m looking at around £1000 but could push it a bit for the right laptop. I’m also in no rush, I am prepared to wait if 🤔

Ah, the classic laptop dilemma! Mate, been there, done that. I’ve got the Dell XPS 15 and I’m loving it. The battery’s solid (easily 10 hours), speakers decent, and it’s got the power for gaming too (RIP my evenings, hello Skyrim). If you’re not hooked on macOS, I’d recommend giving it a go. MacBooks are sleek and all, but they sure hit the wallet. And hey, that extra cash could go towards one too many takeaway nights when you’re knee-deep in dissertation stress, just sayin’. Whatever you choose, good luck! Your perfect tech companion is out there somewhere waiting.

she58 Can’t go wrong with an XPS imo. Check out latest deals though to find some great savings.

Totally agreed, XPSs are fab, got one myself last year and it’s still going strong. You might want to consider if you’re more of a Mac or PC person though, cause switching between them can be a bit of a pain, even though both have their own strengths. Don’t forget to check the specs, especially the RAM and hard drive, depending on what you’ll be using it for. If it’s for gaming or editing, you’d want something with a bit more grunt. Right? I swear by my XPS, hasn’t let me down either. Although, gotta admit I did struggle a bit going from Mac to PC, those subtle differences can trip you up. For gaming though, pfft, no comparison, PC all the way. Did you ever try tweaking the RAM before? Made a noticeable difference for me on the heavier games. Anywho, good luck finding your new tech buddy! It’s exciting times.
