I don't use gadgets, I keep it plain and simple.
I use calender and digital clock. Just so I'm aware of things
The calculator thing or the thing to check your temp are pretty cool
I used driveinfo , CPU Meter Gadget and The System Control A1 gadget and few more
Not so much specifically for Windows 7, but I have CCleaner and Registry Mechanic installed on all of my computers, they're optimisation/repairal tools.

I'm not using any gadget tho.. & the search thingy at the start bar are really great.. =)
I disabled all the gadgets and the side bar on my laptop because i don't like them. I don't use alot of tools tough.
IMO gadgets are stupid, but I love the search bar in the start menu

Same, the search bar is really nice.
gadgets are a waste of space in my opinion
