So I am thinking about getting a small home server for a few things (legit not illegal)

The thing is I don't know much about servers. I don't need much space but speed is of factor which means talking my mom into a faster internet connection.

Can anyone point me to a few articles/ebooks on running a server ?

I am only familiar with hosting lol.

Just a few sites of mine and a irc/vent. What bothers me though is I also wanted to make a vpn .... it be the same IP so it's pointless.

Found that like I said not much will be on it mostly just to learn off of it.

How would I go about connecting to that. I don't know much command line and never installed a OS on something that didn't already have one.
Your link doesn't work.

You can connect through SSH.
I have my own vps now but I would like a setup guide that up to date.
Connection speed really depends on what your router / line can handle. Upgrading your broadband won't necessarily be faster.
You'll have problems if th server gets DDoS'ed because it will take out your entire network.
If you're a beginner with servers try ubuntu-server or Cent OS 5. Both are command line but that's a good thing when it comes to servers.
What OS did you install?

Ubuntu .. 64 bit Latest
YOu should be able to debug what is going wrong.
Also i recommend CentOS 5 for server OS.
Download CENTOS 5 and get a N speed wireless adapter and use your neihbors wifi
I have seen to many threads of people hosting forums that get DDOSED...

If you use a wireless connection your home (personal router) is unaffected. YOu could connect to a VPN and re-host in less then 60 seconds....
