Hey so I wanted to teach the people of SF how to create a logo! Here we go:
Step One:
Starting off. Open photoshop and go to File>New and create a document that is 500x100, or 550x100 if you want a small image (like the feather on SF. Mine will be a bit bigger because the text I will be typing is long (Support Forums.)
Step Two:
Type your text. Type whatever you want your logo to say. For best results with this tutorial, you want a darker color. I will be using the darker of the two background stripes here on SF. For this tutorial it is also best if your text is all on one line.
Step Three:
Adding gloss. Start a new layer and get out your Eliptical Marquee tool (M) and put an oval that is only partly covering the logo, like so:
Get your Paint Bucket tool (G) and set your foreground color to white (FFFFFF.) Dump white into the selected area. Now, CTRL + Click the small box next to the text layer (part of it, really) that probably has a T on it. Now go to Select>Inverse. Select your white layer. Now get your Move tool (V) and move it over the white. There should now be a cusor with small scissors. Click the white area (the part that ISN'T over the text) and drag it to somewhere else on the canvas. Now hit Backspace or Delete. Now all you should have is this:
Now click the white layer (if it isn't already selected) and set the opacity to 15-40%, you decide what looks best.
OPTIONAL STEP:
Texture. Go to flickr's creative commons, and find images that you are able to distribute. Type in "Texture," find one you like, download it, and open it in photoshop. Drag it over to your logo, make sure all the text is covered (put it on multiple times if it is too small.) Now, CTRL + Click the small box next to the text layer (part of it, really) that probably has a T on it. Now go to Select>Inverse. Select your texture layer. Now get your Move tool (V) and move it over the texture. There should now be a cusor with small scissors. Now click the texture layer (if it isn't already selected) and set the opacity to 15-40%, you decide what looks best.
OPTIONAL STEP:
Finally, you can add a small image to the logo if you want to. I am going to add the SF feather. Open the image in PhotoShop (File>Open) and simply drag the extra image over to your canvas. Position it where you want.
Congratulations, you have made a logo! Have a nice day!
