This is very true. I often have to guide linux minded hosts on the subtle differences. I would totally consider CentOS as a viable option if you need to rely on managed hosting.

The last thing you want is to be clueless and then your host to be clueless too.
Yes, I know exactly what you mean Omni. When I was learning bsd about a year and a half ago I'd say, my host had no clue anything about it really. Bad idea. I ended up going back to CentOS where we were both comfortable lol.
I would use centos for linux and irc hosting.
I have used freebsd for both web and irc hosting before.
