I recommend just getting a totally unmanaged VPS from
linode or something and just doing it all yourself, you learn a lot more...seriously.
The thing is, when something goes wrong and he doesn't know how to fix it, he's going to be screwed.
That's why you have Google.
And Google doesn't have an answer to every question you have. On top of that, if you get a managed server most hosts will also monitor it for you, however, if you get an unmanaged a lot of times you're going to be flapping in the wind, with really the only thing you can do to monitor it is but a monitoring service for http, ftp, etc. and use the top command.
