So, I'mma try my hand at making a myBB forum.

Will I be using a webserver, or a VPS?

Webhost when starting up, vps when getting bigger, and server when its becoming huge that your vps cannot handle it.

Well, that's what's confusing me.

I'm trying to pin point the diffeerences between a webhost and a vpn.

So, any webhost that has mySQL, PHP, and SSH will be fine?

Looking at this website for starting my forum,
any reason I shouldn't use them?

I assume you mean VPS not VPN, however for starting up a shared webhosting plan will be fine. As long as it provides PHP, MySQL not many will grant you SSH however some may give you jailed SSH for small commands. A VPS is the next level up when your outgrowing shared hosting, where you are given a dedicated environment in a virtual partion of a server. Which means your able to do as you please, but still not rape the CPU.

If you outgrow a VPS purchase a dedicated server from root SA they're very good at what they do, im currently working on a project which I will be hosting from home on a 100mb/s line on a shitty dual core box just for fun Smile
Start with shared hosting.
http://hdwebprovider.com - best there is
Then move to a cheap dedicated when you get lots of concurrent connections.
Buy hostgator shared hosting first.
it can handle a lot of traffic - 30K UVs daily

once its not enough, buy a dedi or vps

Already got hosting, thanks though o.o
Start with small, choose hosting. When you think the features of shared hosting isn't enough, go for the servers!
Depending on what will be hosted.

Go with a reseller hosting package then later on a vps.

Thats the best answer for me. Start with a shared host and see how things go...
