Well you need your sleep, just don't let the cat in your bedroom. Close your door and don't look the cat in the eyes!
I know the feeling looking at my dog in the eyes, I always give in you just can't help it.

I wouldnt let someone elses cat in the house in the first place.
Then again, it wouldn't stand much chance with our dog

It happened over time, but the owners know and trust that the cat is happy with its visits.

So that's the plan.
So it just walks into your house? Ask the owner to take control of it and keep it indoors. Damn I couldn't resist a cat myself.

If it has a collar then bring it back to it's owner, obviously. Are you sure you don't have any specific scents that would attract it? Maybe candles? Left out food? What ever you do, don't look at it directly in the eye, that means that you pose a threat, a typically dangerous one. Maybe it's purring because it's afraid or injured as well. Purring doesn't just mean that it's comfortable. If it's TOO MUCH to handle, bring it back to the owner and really say it's bothering you.
