Anyone have any suggestions?
I know for sure I'm buying more RAM, and perhaps a better graphics card as this one seems to get warm VERY quickly with limited things.
What's your budget?
Perhaps a new processor (i3) and graphics card (nVidia gtx2xx).

Well, I have around a grand to spend, but I'd prefer not to spend it all
Well the two mentioned will be £350 max.

not just 350, if he will buy a i3, then that would include changing mobo and ram also.

It would be better if you bought Ge Force 8600 GT instead 8500.
Like 1gb RAM memory more would be better,if you have enough budget i would suggest you Intel Dual Core or Quadro.
